Background

Lockdowns – a word I did not even know the meaning of until a few years ago – can be trying, but they also gave me an opportunity for introspection and self-discovery. I found painting gave me a therapeutic escape from the scary reality —a way to channel my emotions, express myself, and find beauty in unexpected places. It became a means of connecting with my inner self and the world around me. As a practising Architect, I started painting during lockdown, somehow going back to one of my first aspirations as a child, that of becoming an Artist, one day… I studied at the only specialised Lycee of Fine Art in the country before I entered the University of Architecture Ion Mincu, Bucharest, and graduated with a first degree in Architecture in 1989. My formation as a young artist gave me a whole new approach to Architecture both during my studies but also in the years that followed, which I applied whenever possible, ranging from re-configuring small extensions to existing properties, through to resolving design issues during the fit-out of The Shard, London (Shangri-La Hotel).

But let’s go back to Art…

As an Artist, I draw inspiration from nature which, in my world, is very often transported into a different dimension, where distortion and contrast are at home – it all adds to the overall aesthetic experience. A powerful dynamism, sprinkled with lots of emotional nuances, these are notes deeply rooted in my own background. A lifelong career as an Architect gives me the strength to break through and embrace the freedom to create Fine Art without any constraints, making Art and Architecture talk to each other.

And this comes as no surprise, as artists and architects explore similar principles of balance, proportion, colour, texture, and form to create visually engaging experiences. I find that inspiration becomes very often a two-way process, where artistic elements are very often incorporated into architectural designs and vice versa.

  1. Hi Irina,

We popped into Galeria Moderna at the weekend and came across your work, which we really liked. We especially liked the “flower show’ but we are looking for something a bit bigger. We wondered if you have anything similar that is bigger? We loved the colours and the style and would go well in our home.

    1. Hi Fiona,

I am glad you enjoyed our exhibition.

I checked and I don’t have anything similar with ‘Flower Show’ that is bigger, but I could do one for you. Please let me know the size you would like and the type of frame (unless you would like it unframed), so that I could work out a price for you.

      Kind regards,
      Irina
